Henry Wessel Grossmont College, 2000. Taken during a series of late night strolls through an unidentified West Los Angeles neighborhood, Henry Wessel’s luminous black and white photographs of Spanish style bungalows, one bedroom matchbox homes, and courtyard apartment buildings reveal the slippery interplay between the homes people live in and the social and material “facts” we infer from them. These anonymous dwellings cloaked in shadows or bathed in the moon’s incandescent glow, conjure the penumbral settings of film noir, as does Wessel’s use of light and shadow to illuminate the shifty nature of things that appear to be self evident.
