SHOWGIRLS: PORTRAIT OF A FILM
Newmarket Press, 1995. Text by the film’s director Paul Verhoeven. Photographs by Murray Close, Douglas Kirkland, Mary Ellen Mark and Bettina Rheims. Largely panned at the time of its release, it has since gained enormous cult status, even re-evaluated by some critics and filmmakers, such as Jonathan Rosenbaum, Jim Hoberman, Jim Jarmusch, and Jacques Rivette, defending the film as a serious satire. John Waters may have described it best, “Showgirls is funny, stupid, dirty, and filled with cinematic cliches; in other words, perfect.” The only NC-17 film to date to be given wide release in mainstream theaters.
